The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) is responsible for implementing the Control of Use (CoU) legislation relating to the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals. This legislation was put in place to ensure that agricultural and veterinary chemical users apply chemical products to assist in the production of food, in a responsible manner.

To assist in  the implementation of this legislation, DEPI conducts an annual produce monitoring program and undertakes investigations relating to the CoU of agricultural chemicals. DEPI requires a laboratory to anlayse plant, environmental and biological samples for the presence of residues of agricultural chemicals to support both of these activities.
