Inscription of Marble Headstones for Commonwealth War Graves and Australian Post-War Graves
Tender ID: 230402
Tender Details
Tender Description
OAWG is seeking to engage a panel of monumental stonemasons to inscribe new or replacement marble headstones for Commonwealth war graves, according to CWGC standards and specifications. Furthermore, marble headstones are required for the graves of some Australian service personnel who died post-war, but of war-related causes, as well as the casualties of current conflicts.
The majority of war graves in Australia and PNG feature headstones made from Ulam marble. Due to a lack of supply, new headstones are manufactured from Chillagoe marble. OAWG owns approximately 330 Chillagoe marble headstone blanks, which is more difficult to inscribe fine detail upon than Ulam marble. Any stonemasons that are engaged by OAWG would be encouraged to provide input and suggestions for ways to overcome the problems associated with using Chillagoe marble. Solutions may include (but not be limited to) using a different stone for work requiring finer detail, or using different technology.
