• Context and Background

State Library Victoria is Australias oldest and busiest public library. Since its establishment in 1854, it has always been a place where ideas, learning, culture and creativity are cultivated. As one of seven UNESCO Cities of Literature, Melbournes literary heritage and culture is internationally recognised. Serving a State of more than 5.8 million today, and part of a truly global community, the Library is now repositioning itself for the future. It is continuing to realise the goals that it aspired to when it was first established, and it is striving beyond these goals to a new vision to be:

A place where all Victorians can discover, learn, create and connect; a cultural and heritage destination for Victorians; and a leader in the discovery of information, enabling the generation of new knowledge and ideas.

On 29 April 2015 The Minister for Creative Industries announced that the 2015-16 State Budget will provide $55.4 million to transform the State Library Victoria. A further $28 million will be raised by the State Library through philanthropic donations to realise the $83 million Vision 2020 redevelopment project. The Vision 2020 project commenced in April 2015 and is currently forecast to be completed in 2020.

The project aims to:

• Benefit more Victorians by expanding the State Library's reach and relevance in the community
• Enhance the public experience of using the State Library by opening up more spaces, modernising the building, and restoring heritage spaces
• Adapt the State Library's services and programs to evolving community needs and  expectations
• Grow the State Library's visitation, community engagement and access, and build our network of supporters and partners
• The project aims will be achieved by:
• Expanding available public spaces to support and accommodate the ever-growing number of visitors
• Redeveloping existing public spaces making them more accessible, adaptable, modern and innovative
• Enhancing staff capability through improved amenity of workspaces and professional development
• Restoring and opening Queens Hall the original heritage reading room and the oldest part of the library, returning it to public use
• Increasing connection with regional Victorians through digital delivery of programs
• Creating engaging, purpose-built spaces for children and families to nurture creative learning, literacy and play
• Creating technology-enabled spaces for entrepreneurship and innovation to support and stimulate the creative economy
• Increasing contribution to Victorias education economy by supporting the states growing number of international students with improved access and spaces
• Increasing contribution to Victorias tourism economy through the restoration and enhancement of heritage and exhibition spaces
• Ensuring financially sustainable operations
