The Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) provides risk advice and insurance services for the Victorian Government. We work with our clients to improve the quality of life for the Victorian community. We advise and insure more than 4500 clients. These include Victorian Government departments, statutory authorities and agencies, as well as hospitals, tertiary institutions, health centres, community service organisations, national parks, museums and cemetery trusts. We also cover particular infrastructure such as state roads, rail and bridges.

In addition, under the Domestic Building Insurance program, we provide insurance cover for approximately 15,000 Victorian residential builders.

Our current portfolio represents approximately $173 billion in assets, backed by state insurance.

The VMIA has offered domestic building insurance (sometimes called ‘builders warranty’) in Victoria since 2010. Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) is obtained by builders on behalf of homeowners and covers domestic building works undertaken by registered domestic builders in the event that a builder dies, disappears or becomes insolvent. DBI provides cover to property owners for incomplete and / or defective building work.

The services of building inspectors are utilised by the VMIA as part of the claims management process to assess the loss incurred by homeowners as a result of incomplete and / or defective building works when the builder dies, becomes insolvent or disappears or the builder fails to comply with a VCAT or court order (for certificates of insurance issued on or after the 1 July 2015).

One of the core functions of the DBI team is to manage approximately 700 claims per annum. The objective of this opportunity is to establish a panel of inspectors to access, as required, in the management of DBI claims. As part of this process the VMIA will pursue opportunities that increase customer service levels, resolve claims more quickly and improve efficiencies from the claims lodgment stage through to the claims decision.
