Demolition of Wickham Hospital
Tender ID: 333647
Tender Details
Tender Description
The old Wickham Hospital building was constructed in 1972 by Robe River Mining Co, transferred to the Department of Health in 1992 and has surpassed its design life. In January 2014, Tropical Cyclone Christine disturbed asbestos awning panels and increased water ingress into the building, with mould being evident.
The site has recently been purchased by the City of Karratha who do not intend to repair the hospital or recommence use of the building. To enable future development of the site, the buildings, all services and asphalt areas are to be removed.
A competitive running track used by Wickham VFRS is constructed along the northern boundary of the property, running parallel with Wickham Drive. The City has made contact with DFES and the Wickham VFRS who have confirmed their intentions to enter into a lease to retain the running track and associated infrastructure. The running track and associated infrastructure/services are to be retained, and are not part of the demolition works.
The site was previously used by WA Country Health Services as a local hospital. During the operation of the hospital, the site was subject to an asbestos register, and after damage by TC Christine was subject to a Building Condition assessment
