Tender Description

The Mount Isa to Tennant Creek Railway Project aims to link the existing Tarcoola to Darwin railway with the Great Northern Line operating from Mount Isa to Townsville.

The Northern Territory (NT) Government considers a rail link connecting the NT to north-western Queensland as critical for regional and national economic development and the creation of regional employment opportunities.

The project would provide rail connectivity between the Port of Townsville and the Port of Darwin. It is expected to leverage the potential development of phosphate, agriculture, gas/liquids and other mineral exports along the rail corridor.

The Port of Darwin currently possesses excellent rail and road access and capabilities to handle both bulk and container freight.

The project would also provide additional rail connectivity into the Mount Isa region to support existing and potential mining and processing opportunities. General freight between the NT and Queensland would also be able to move to rail and reduce the impact of heavy vehicles on the interstate road network.

The NT, Queensland and Australian governments are investigating the project to understand the economic, commercial, technical, environmental and engineering requirements that will need to be addressed as part of any future development of the railway as part of the Darwin to Townsville transport corridor.

The Mount Isa to Tennant Creek Railway is expected to deliver significant economic benefit, including:

* solidifying rail links between Darwin and the east coast
* increasing commodity exports out of the NT
* increasing general freight between the NT and Queensland
* enhancing regional development in the Tennant Creek and Mount Isa surrounds.
