As part of the State Library of New South Wales’ 2016 Masterplan, the Library has been reconsidering its primary entrance for the last few years. Upgrades to access and circulation within the Mitchell Building have been largely addressed in the recently completed Mitchell Galleries Project, however an identifiable, equitable and accessible major public entry to the Mitchell Building is now considered essential to accommodate the increase in visitors to the Library and to continue to support the programs and services of a key cultural institution.

The Library has recently proposed a ramp located on the western side of the Mitchell Portico to address this requirement however, the Library is now seeking a less obtrusive proposal such as a travelator or incline style lift system located on the eastern side of the Mitchell Building entrance.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) are invited by the State Library of NSW from experienced organisations wishing to be pre-registered to tender for the proposed contract for the design, supply and installation of a custom lift system specifically for visitors requiring wheelchairs, mobility aids and prams to travel from Shakespeare Place up to the Mitchell Portico.
