Tender Description
On behalf of The Anindilyakwa Royalties Aboriginal Corporation (ARAC) The ALC is seeking an Architectural Consultant to design and document the new Anindilyakwa Boarding School.
The proposed College is a response to the Groote Eylandt communities and the ALC’s serious concerns regarding the very poor educational outcomes being achieved by children on Groote Eylandt.
The principal driver for this project results from the extremely low school attendance figures of Groote Eylandt students and the resulting lack of educational qualifications being attained among students. Students face many challenges in maintaining their attendance at school stemming from a mixture of home, school, and individual factors.
The ALC and the community have agreed that the development of an independent boarding school for primary school students ‘on country’ would be a significant step in addressing the very poor educational outcomes for Groote Eylandt children. This proposal would allow local language and culture to be taught alongside the Australian curriculum, and significantly, allow the school to be governed by a board of local directors.
As a result of this, the ALC is seeking to engage a suitably qualified Architectural Consultant to develop detailed site-specific design and documentation for this Bilingual boarding school.
Cultural requirements specific to Groote Eylandt have influenced the College design. Site planning and building design should be culturally appropriate and some critical considerations include:
• Site planning and building design responsive to cultural requirements such as privacy and direction of country (e.g., through the orientation of buildings)
• Enabling a healthy, safe, and liveable community
• Consider the importance of students of the same family groups to live near each other
• Consider the possible privacy required between students of unrelated family groups
• Acknowledgment of other cultural sensitivities, such as issues around “mamaginja” (black magic)
The staging for the student intake of the College is envisaged as follows:
• Stage 1 – up to 24 students
• 2 – up to 40 students (Stage 1 + 2 = 40)
