Defence Science and Technology Group is uplifting internal research data management practice, aiming to make it easier for researchers to plan for, manage, share and archive research datasets.
Part of the Digital Science Branch, Research Data & Information (RDI) are implementing first iterations of a eResearch Planning and Provisioning tool and Data Catalogue to help manage Research Data within DSTG. The aim is to build a linked data environment using descriptive, machine readable metadata and peristent identifiers that can be queried using a powerful discovery layer that delivers excellent results and user experience. Such an environment will enable DSTG researchers to plan management of research data at the beginning of a project, provision appropriate digital research infrastructure, and describe datasets to be archived in such a way that enables data re-use and sharing. The discovery layer will allow researchers to search for and where possible, access existing datasets.
RDI is looking to partner with a suitably experienced company to devise an overarching Data Management Concept/Model that is universal across DSTG Research Divisions; advise on complex data quality and assurance issues such as provenance, versioning and derivatives; and provide a Discovery Layer solution that will suit DSTGs unique environment.
Background
Research Data & Information (RDI) has responsibility for delivery of Digital Infrastructure and Data Management standards for DSTG. RDI will be working closely with the Defence Data Division once established to ensure an overarching concept is devised within DSTG that will align with Defence direction. Initial consultation with DSTG researchers and other key stakeholders has informed our Research Data Management strategic direction and created excitement about what we’re aiming for.
Further consultation is currently underway with DSTG research organisational units, but we need to accelerate, synthesise, iterate and broaden our efforts.
We require:
A team of technical consultation experts with experience in Research Data Management to propose and guide us in implementing a solution that will deliver an agreed target Research data Management end state. To stand out, you will have:
• Demonstrated experience of defining a suitable RDM Capability within Australian Research Organisations
• Demonstrated ability to work with complex, technical content
• Demonstrated knowledge of Australian best practice in RDM
The task includes:
• Design of an organisational RDM Concept/Model suited to the secure DSTG environment
• Advice and solutions for complex research data management challenges including:
o data provenance, versioning and derivatives;
o sound implementation of persistent identifiers for research data management plans, research datasets and other research inputs/outputs;
o data preservation;
o harvesting/crosswalking of dataset metadata between repositories and aggregators
o reporting to enable tracking of service adoption and effectiveness
• Partnering with us on selection and implementation of an intuitive Discovery Layer to support dataset searching, discovery, access/permissions and reuse.
Deliverables
