Tender Description

Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) has engaged Energy Market Matters Australia (Emma) to seek proposals from developers of renewable energy projects for a renewable energy PPA.

Corporate Profile
NCIG owns and operates one of Australia's major coal export terminals. The coal terminal is an integral part of Australia's coal supply chain generating strong economic benefits for the Hunter Region and for New South Wales. NCIG's facilities include rail, coal storage, ship loading facilities and associated infrastructure.

Based in the Port of Newcastle, NCIG's operations ensure reliability and continuity of coal supply from Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Gloucester, Gunnedah and Western Coalfields to the world export market.

The parent entities of NCIG's shareholders include:

BHP Billiton
Yancoal,
Whitehaven Coal,
Peabody Energy, and
Centennial Coal.

Further background information can be obtained on NCIG's website: https://www.ncig.com.au

Corporate Objectives
NCIG's corporate objectives for securing a renewable PPA are to deliver 100% renewable energy:
a) as a net zero supply,
b) at the lowest possible cost,
c) with as much cost certainty as possible in a volatile, uncertain and complex energy transition.

NCIG's research into options for achieving its key energy objectives has led to a preference for securing a foundation PPA direct with a developer.

Scope and volume
The renewable PPA is intended to cover 100% of NCIG's average total electricity consumption. This has varied from 60 GWh in 2022 to approximately 80 GWh per annum in prior years.

Term
NCIG is aware that to balance the opposing forces of lowest cost energy and renewable supply to a large extent requires underwriting new asset developments. Accordingly, subject to price, terms, and conditions, NCIG is prepared to enter into a contract for renewable energy for up to 10 years.

More information on NCIG, its objectives, its energy consumption characteristics and the proposed procurement process is available in the tender information pack.
