The Queensland Government has announced the Low Emissions Investment Partnerships (LEIP), which aims to accelerate least-cost emissions reductions via partnerships and co-investment in established emissions reduction strategies. The focus is on reducing emissions from the State’s largest emitting facilities, with an initial focus on the metallurgical coal industry.

Queensland Treasury is seeking a strategic emissions specialist to support emissions reductions from the State’s largest emitting facilities, with an initial focus on the metallurgical coal industry.

In addition to this strategic support, the emissions specialist will also provide more technical advice over the course of this multi-year program, including:

• Estimated emission projections of LEIP facilities out to 2050s
• Estimated Safeguard Mechanism baseline projections of LEIP facilities out to 2050
• How LEIP facilities are currently expected to achieve their annual emissions requirements under the Safeguard Mechanism (excluding any LEIP projects) out to 2050
• The reduction in emissions likely to be achieved by the proposed LEIP projects
• The risks and issues surrounding the anticipated reduction in emissions from the proposed LEIP projects
• The proposed LEIP project’s impact on facility emission projection profiles, and subsequent impacts on how the facility will meet its annual Safeguard Mechanism baseline requirements
• The use, transfer or retirement of Safeguard Mechanism Credits (SMCs) that are generated as part of LEIP
• The overall impact on Queensland’s emissions inventory resulting from any proposed LEIP projects.
