"The Department requires the services of a suitably qualified individual or firm to undertake an independent review of the opal mining industry in NSW, including the statutory framework under the Mining Act 1992 as it relates to opals. This review will provide independent analysis and insight into the opal mining industry and its associated regulatory framework, to make recommendations about the future of the industry, including proposed legislative and policy reform to deliver practical and beneficial changes. This will assist the Department in ensuring that the administration and regulation of the opal industry is fit for purpose and adequately balances the needs and rights of both miners and landholders.
