Diver assisted suction dredging of exotic Caulerpa in Omākiwi Cove, Bay of Islands
Tender ID: 536010
Tender Details
Tender Description
In June 2021, two species of the exotic green algae Caulerpa (Caulerpa brachypus and Caulerpa parvifolia) were identified in Aotea, New Zealand. By May 2023, these species were identified in Te Rāwhiti Northland, prompting a unified response from local hapū, council, BNZ, and MPI.
This RFP seeks experienced marine suction dredging providers to address the Caulerpa infestation in Te Rāwhiti (Bay of Islands).
The primary goal is to conduct a proof-of-concept trial on the efficacy of suction dredging in removing Caulerpa infestations larger than one hectare. This includes understanding the treatment's consistency on various seafloors, substrates, and Caulerpa densities. The trial will also assess the treatment's impact on the Mauri and ecology, risk management of spreading Caulerpa fragments, and key operational cost metrics.
This contract provides an opportunity to shape the future of marine biosecurity threat management in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The primary outcome is to establish diver-assisted suction dredging as a viable marine biosecurity tool and gather data to inform large-scale responses. Respondents are expected to have a track record in delivering environmentally sensitive marine projects, the capacity for large-scale operations, and innovative solutions.
