Tender Description

The Powerlink-led CopperString 2032 project, involves building 840km of new electricity transmission line from just south of Townsville in the Burdekin region to Mount Isa that will connect Queensland's North West Minerals Province (NWMP) to the National Electricity Market.

Approximately 200km of additional transmission line will also be required to connect new renewable generators to CopperString 2032. This is the largest ever economic development project in North Queensland, and one of the largest expansions to the transmission network in Australia

Powerlink, alongside construction partners the UGL CPB joint venture, will ensure that CopperString 2032 provides energy certainty to the region's growing critical minerals sector, delivering reliable, affordable and renewable power to the people, businesses and communities in the region. It will also enable the development of new renewable generation projects and related industries.

The project formerly known as CopperString 2.0, transitioned from CuString PTY LTD to Powerlink ownership in March 2023. This strategic move dovetails with the commitments of the Queensland Government as outlined in the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan.

It will connect the NWMP to the Northern Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, which has the potential to be one of the largest renewable energy zones (REZ) in Australia. This connection will form an essential part of the new Queensland SuperGrid transmission backbone to be delivered under the $62 billion Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan

Proposed project components include:

500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line from just south of Townsville in the Burdekin region to Hughenden
330kV transmission line from Hughenden to Cloncurry
220kV transmission line from Cloncurry to Mount Isa
up to six new substation sites
access tracks and roads to the new substation and transmission line structures, as required
