About Southern Winds Offshore Wind Project
The Southern Winds Offshore Wind Project is located approximately 8 - 20 km off the coast of South Australia and Victoria between Cape Douglas (South Australia) and Nelson (Victoria), approximately 60 km west of Portland.
The Project involves 77 'bottom-fixed' wind turbines, two offshore substations and associated infrastructure with the capacity to generate up to 1.155 GW of electricity. Subsea and underground landside cables will connect the Project to either the Portland Aluminium Smelter switchyard or via a new transmission line to the Heywood Terminal Station.
Project Development Timeline
Building an offshore wind project is complex and typically takes between 6 - 11 years to carry out site feasibility (to determine the suitability of a location), obtain the necessary approvals and to be constructed.
BlueFloat Energy are currently in the feasibility, development and approvals stage of the project lifecycle. This includes required marine and landside environmental and cultural heritage surveys, ground investigations, technical design, as well as obtaining Commonwealth and State environmental and planning approvals. BlueFloat Energy expect this stage to last until around 2026, followed by two years of detailed design and Front End Engineering Design. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2028 and will last approximately two years. The Project will be operational from 2030 onwards, and include ongoing operations, monitoring and maintenance activities.
