Tender ID: 551401
Tender Details
Tender Description
The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) through its Tourism Research Australia (TRA) business is responsible for producing the foundation for Australian tourism measurement. TRA delivers on its vision through the collection of consistent high quality tourism data that aligns with international standards and is used to strengthen evidence-based policy advice, improve program management, support industry, feed into the Australia National Accounts and grow the visitor economy.
Prior to COVID-19, the visitor economy was worth $166 billion to the national economy. It contributed to the vibrancy of our cities and was the economic lifeblood of many regional communities across the country.
International visitors are a key component of the Australian Visitor Economy and are crucial to its recovery and resurgence. In 2019 international visitation accounted for 36 per cent or $59 billion of the $166 billion total visitor expenditure. This includes $14 billion by leisure (holiday and visiting friends and relatives) travelers, $4 billion by business and working travelers and $12 billion by students in Australia less than 12 months.
The visitor economy generates jobs and provides services and infrastructure in regional communities. In 2019 the visitor economy contributed 3.4 per cent to gross domestic product (GDP) in the regions, compared to a 1.6 per cent contribution to GDP in capital cities. The ongoing supply of tourism data is essential to measuring the value of the industry, its performance and contribution to Australia’s economic prosperity.
