The project will replace the ageing and no longer fit-for-purpose Buckland House with a new building connected to and collocated with the Bindaree Retirement Centre which is located nearby on a site owned by Mansfield District Hospital.

The project will be completed over a number of stages and includes:

Construction of two residential aged care wings adjoining the existing Bindaree Retirement Centre ('new' Buckland House) on vacant land adjacent to the Bindaree Retirement Centre;

Construction of a new co-located kitchen servicing both the Bindaree Retirement Centre and Buckland House Nursing Home;

Refurbishment works to the existing Bindaree Retirement Centre; Minor refurbishment of the 'old' Buckland House to provide Community Health Facilities.

The new aged care building will be designed to comply with the Department of Health's Public Sector Residential Aged Care Services (PSRACS) Design Guidelines, including for the following features:

Single bedrooms with private ensuites, promoting dignity, privacy and independence;

Support for a range of complex care needs and mobility, including those living with dementia;

Features to reduce the risk of infectious outbreaks; and,

Landscaped gardens and terraces to encourage residents to spend time outdoors.

With a focus on mobility and dementia-friendly design, the facility will cater to the more complex needs of residents and will better support independence and mental health. The design will also allow residents to enjoy open area views and natural light from their bedrooms, while terraces and gardens will be designed to blend in seamlessly to the surrounding natural environment.

The facility will also include a community room, reflection room and other common areas designed to encourage social interactions between residents, staff and families and allow for a wide range of day-to-day activities.
