Edgar Dam is located on the southern side of Lake Pedder approximately 34 km along Scotts Peak Road from Gordon River Road and approximately 5 km east of Scotts Peak Dam.

The site is remote.

Strathgordon, a small village supporting Hydro Tasmania operations with tourist accommodation, is 70 km northwest of the site by road. The township of Maydena is 60 km northeast on Gordon River Road towards Hobart.

Hydro Tasmania plans to upgrade the dam to reduce the risks from failure to tolerable limits, with upgrade works including:

• Dewatering of the downstream toe pond and foundation fluvioglacial gravel layer to facilitate safe excavation of toe pond materials down to bedrock
• Construction of a full height filter buttress including rockfill berm on the downstream face of the embankment as well as backfilling of the existing toe pond
• Reinstating the downstream Scotts Peak Road embankment affected by the proposed works
• External sealing of the upstream face concrete joints
• Installing a precast concrete crest wall and extending the concrete crest capping
• Decommissioning of affected monitoring instrumentation including V-notch measuring weir and survey markers
• Installation of new monitoring instrumentation including survey markers and V-notch measuring weirs.

All works shall be undertaken in accordance with the requirements of this specification (inclusive of appendices).
