INTRODUCTION

H+H Architects have been engaged by the Shire of Carnarvon to undertake the design of the Shire of Carnarvon Activation Project. H+H Architects are the largest regional architectural practice in WA with extensive experience in the design of public spaces and are committed to enhancing communities via the built form. We work collaboratively to achieve the best design outcomes for our clients and the local community.

The Carnarvon Activation Project will improve the connectivity, aesthetic appeal and useability of the Tramway Trail, Van Dongen Park, Town Oval and Main Street. Part of this project is including public art, which will feature in each of these locations.

The scope may include a number of physical locations and could be across various art mediums, with the aim of creating a unified artistic element that tells a story or theme, and both complements and enhances the local amenities and streetscapes. The public art design will be awarded to an individual artist or artist team who provides an artwork that best reflects Carnarvon, with an imaginative response to the proposed theme. 

ART OPPORTUNITIES & LOCATIONS

The Carnarvon Activation Project includes the design and install various public art pieces, mainly concentrated in the Robinson Street precinct and entry into Van Dongen Park. Elements of Public Art may also be installed at the Town Oval and Tramway trail.

The Public art designs are to be incorporated on a variety of applications, for example:

• Street furniture (seating, shade canopies, bins etc)

• Planter boxes

• Street light banners

• Illuminated artwork

Further application of public art could be included within the pavement, hanging elements, on the verge, on existing light poles etc. The Artwork design should take account the general site, and the regional and environmental context in which they will be located. There are a number of existing sculptural art elements within this precinct which could be considered within your approach to unify the existing and proposed artistic schemes. The Artwork design can be either abstract or more representational in nature but must respond to the below theme.
