Empowering Australians to look after their health and wellbeing, equipped with the necessary information and tools is a priority area of the new National Digital Health Strategy (NDHS). Supporting strong consumer digital health literacy, increasing access to available health information and enhancing consent management and health information exchange are core elements of this priority area.
Ensuring all Australians have the resources and opportunity to improve their digital skills and benefit from digital health is a task requiring all stakeholder groups. Inclusive design and delivery of evidence-based, best-practice digital health literacy programs and initiatives will maximise digital health’s potential.As defined in the new NDHS, digital health literacy is a combination of health literacy – individuals being able to understand and apply the health information they receive – and digital literacy – individuals being able to navigate and apply digital tools. When high levels of digital health literacy exist alongside intuitive and integrated digital solutions, the community and health workforce can cohesively and equitably participate in the future of digital health.
The Australian Digital Health Agency (the Agency), building on existing research, seeks to better understand the current state of digital health literacy across Australia and to explore opportunities for ways to improve digital health literacy across all stakeholder groups. This research will support implementation of the new NDHS Delivery Roadmap Priority Area and Initiatives:
- 2.1 Support strong consumer digital health literacy
- 2.1.3 Undertake research and evaluate the effectiveness of digital health literacy programs to inform program development.
