Tender Description

Knee ligament injuries, particularly anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and associated joint cartilage damage, are a significant national health concern in Australia, often leading to severe short and long-term disabilities, including early onset osteoarthritis. These sports and activity related injuries profoundly impact the wellbeing of young Australians, with notably worse outcomes among the socially disadvantaged and those residing in non-metropolitan areas.

For over a decade, the Australian Orthopaedic Association and the Australian Knee Society have highlighted the diverse and variable outcomes following severe knee ligament injuries and emphasised the need for an Australian ACL registry.

This project aims to develop the Severe Knee Injury Pathways Platform for Youth (SKIPPY), setting the groundwork for a National ACL Injury Registry within the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry.

SKIPPY aspires to establish a scalable, cloud-based platform designed to identify and address various factors influencing inconsistent outcomes post-severe knee ligament injuries. These factors include individual patient characteristics, healthcare system elements, and a range of social determinants such as socioeconomic status, educational level, occupation, and recreational risk factors.

SKIPPY will enrol patients suffering from severe knee ligament injuries, regardless of their management plans, and will systematically report on the factors affecting their outcomes. This inclusive and comprehensive approach aims to improve understanding and management of these injuries, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes for young Australians across different social strata and geographical locations.

The SKIPPY platform is expected to significantly improve patient outcomes by enabling data-driven decision making, reducing treatment disparities, and advancing research in ACL injuries. This project has the potential to set a new standard in knee injury care and rehabilitation across Australia.
