Overview
The Gawara Baya Wind Farm (previously known as Upper Burdekin Wind Farm) is located near the community of Mount Fox, northwest of Townsville in Queensland, Australia, approximately 180km by road via Ingham. The project is located on an active cattle property within Gugu Badhun Country in north Queensland, in close proximity to the existing electricity transmission network.
Gawara Baya Wind Farm will generate enough clean energy to power up to 300,000 Australian homes, eliminating more than 1.2 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the energy market every year while supporting overall improved outcomes for regional ecology through strong investment in innovative environmental management initiatives.
Windlab has an agreement with the pastoral landholder and an Indigenous Land Use Agreement with the Gugu Badhun Traditional Owners. The project has received a detailed connection enquiry response from Powerlink. The Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has nominated the project as a Controlled Action requiring assessment and approval under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, with Windlab receiving EPBC approval in July 2024.
Windlab will be using the ICN Gateway to receive expressions of interest from all suppliers for this project and providing opportunities for local suppliers to work with directly with Windlab and with Windlab's main contractors.
Windlab will continuously update this EOI page to reflect new opportunities for engagement as the project continues.
Delivery schedule
With the support of stakeholders and the local community, construction may commence on the Gawara Baya Wind Farm in February 2025 after all regulatory approval requirements have been satisfied and the project has received the 'green light' to proceed.
