Tender Details
Tender Description
The City of Sydney ("the City") invites quotations for the carrying out of specialist services for the Kellerman Murals Conservation Project in accordance with this Request for Tender.
Background:
The Kellerman Murals by Wendy Sharpe consist of eight large acrylic paintings on vinyl ester panels that tell the life story of Australian champion swimmer, aquatic performer and actress, Annette Kellerman. The paintings were installed between concrete columns to the western wall of the Cook + Phillip Park Pool in 1999.
Due to recent hanging point failure on one panel, all eight panels were deinstalled and are now stored at the Wattle Street Depot City of Sydney Facility. See images below of deinstallation in process.
A detailed conservation assessment undertaken in the latter half of 2023 has indicated ferrous corrosion, deformation to aluminium backing, salty deposits on the painting, in addition to blistering and paint loss including scratches.
The following services are required:
- Collection of the artworks from Council storage facility
- Restoration works on aluminium backing sheets.
- Conservation work to paintings
- Review of existing hanging system and permanent location for the artwork at the Cook + Phillip Park Pool, design documentation and provision of certification for new fixings.
- Reinstatement of paintings in Cook + Phillip Park Pool
- The City expects the conservation and restoration team to include (but not be limited to) the following expertise:
- Metals corrosion specialist
- Structural engineer
- Paint conservation specialist.
It is the responsibility of the contractor to undertake the conservation, and restoration works in a secure and suitable studio/workshop environment.
