Purpose:
Austroads seeks responses from appropriately experienced service providers to develop guidelines in support of the implementation of the national roadmap on driver distraction.
Objectives:
The objective of this project is to prepare two guidelines:
1. Human Factors Integration (HFI) into transport system
The purpose of this guideline is to formally incorporate human factors integration (HFI) processes into the design of road transport system to ensure that products and systems are user-centred designed to reduce and mitigate driver distraction. The guidance will provide advice to road designers, builders, managers and operators on how to reduce the risk of driver distraction caused by sources outside the vehicle.
2. In-Vehicle Human-Machine Interface (HMI)
The purpose of this guideline is to formally incorporate a user-centred design of in-vehicle human-machine interface (HMI) that reduces and mitigates driver distraction. It will provide advice to vehicle system designers and vehicle regulators on how to remove/reduce sources of driver distraction that have the potential to increase road safety risks.
The guidelines will be developed drawing from existing relevant guidelines. This includes the information on human factors in the design of transport systems and human-machine interfaces with a focus on reducing distracted driving.
Methodology:
The methodology to carry out the work must include, but is not limited to, identifying and reviewing existing guidelines and relevant literature, consulting with technology and vehicle designers, providers, and manufacturers, and consulting with experts in the field (transportation systems, road design, distraction, etc.).
This project will produce the following final deliverables:
- Guideline to formally incorporate HFI processes into the design of road transport system
- Guideline to formally incorporate a user-centred design of in-vehicle HMI
- A project report.
