The Northern Grampians Shire Council seeks proposals from suitably qualified and experienced consultants to undertake the Great Western Flood Investigation. Great Western was identified in the Wimmera Floodplain Management Strategy 2017 as being at risk of flooding; triggering the need to develop flood risk mapping. In 2014, a Regional Flood Mapping project on Concongella Creek was undertaken. This broadly covered the Great Western township but was not a detailed flood study for the township area. This makes it difficult for emergency services to allocate resources in a flood emergency as well as being a barrier for the orderly development of the town. This is to be rectified by the Great Western Flood Investigation with funds obtained from the Victorian Governments Risk and Resilience Grants Program.

Completion of this project will improve community resilience and reduce the cost of future flood damages by seeking to understand flood behaviour within the study area, exploring various flood-mitigation opportunities and communicating those findings through appropriate reports, mapping, consultation, and education.
