Your Move School and Community Bike Education
Tender ID: 570568
Tender Details
Tender Description
For over twenty years, the Department of Transport (DoT) has offered Western Australians support and advice to help them find more sustainable ways to get around their local area. Your Move is a travel behaviour change program that works with schools, workplaces and communities to increase local walking, bike riding and public transport trips (i.e., active transport) and decrease car trips. During this time, bike education has been delivered to school aged children in WA by several providers including WA Police, WestCycle, AusCycling, local governments, contractors and DoT through Your Move projects and programs. For primary school aged children, having the confidence to ride a bike is a key precursor to riding to school and for local trips with their family and friends.
Bike riding participation in 0-9 and 10-17 year old age groups is on the decline in WA and this is reflected in the historic and lowest levels of active travel to schools in 40 years. In recent years, bike education has become a key part of Your Move supporting both schools and communities to opt for bike riding over car trips to help reverse a decline in active travel.
DoT has a vision to see more children and adults riding bikes and seeks to build capacity to do this by offering bike education courses and also mentoring of teachers and adults who have completed appropriate bicycle instructor training enabling them to deliver bike education ongoingly in the schools that they work in and/or communities that they live in.
