The Gympie Region experienced intense rainfall events in January, February and May 2022 which led to extensive flooding resulting in damage to essential public assets. In response to this damage to essential public assets, Council successfully sought activation under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA)
The Lake Alford Park and all associated infrastructure was inundated under several meters of backed upriver flood waters, resulting in the death of many plants, damage to infrastructure, roads, facilities and requiring extensive cleaning and disinfection.
Council has completed the majority of works to have the park returned to a reasonable condition for the enjoyment of the public and travelling visitors, but there are still substantial works required, which include edge treatments, and natural treatment zones, replanting of flooded damaged garden beds and trees, as well as road/foot path repairs and resurfacing.
