Tender Description

Overview

The Northern Territory (NT) Heritage Grants Program funds conservation work to privately owned heritage places. You can apply for up to $20,000. If you have a larger project in mind you are encouraged to consider staging the project. Priority is given to places on the NT Heritage Register, but grants may also be considered for work to other places of historical importance.

Search the NT Heritage Register to check if a property is listed.

Who can apply

Funding is available to individuals and organisations.

To be eligible for funding an individual must:

  • have met acquittal requirements for all previous funding (this grant) and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • have completed all required information in the application form and submitted required documentation in support of your application
  • be 18 years or older
  • be an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident
  • reside in the NT for the duration of funded activity
Types of individuals that are eligible to apply for funding include:

  • You can only apply if you are the owner of the place or object or provide a letter of endorsement from the owner.
To be eligible for funding an organisation must

  • be physically located and actively operating in the NT
  • have met acquittal requirements for all previous funding (this grant) and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • have met acquittal requirements for previous grants from this department and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • have met acquittal requirements for all previous Northern Territory Government grants and complied with all other accountability requirements
  • have completed all required information in the application form and submitted required documentation in support of your application
  • have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • have an Australian Business Number (ABN) or, if you do not have an ABN, have a completed Statement by a Supplier form (available from the Australia Taxation Office (ATO) website)
Types of organisations that are eligible for funding include:

  • You can only apply if you are the owner of the place or object or provide a letter of endorsement from the owner.
  • a private business
  • a non-profit organisation
  • a community group, including an Aboriginal organisation
What can be funded
You could qualify for funding if conservation work is needed to any of the following:

  • buildings and other structures
  • Aboriginal archaeological sites
  • places of social significance including flora, fauna and geological sites
Projects involving research and documentation may also be considered.

Physical Conservation work

Physical conservation work should be carried out according to the Burra Charter and may include one or more of the following:

  • preservation
  • maintenance
  • restoration
  • reconstruction
  • interpretation.

Research and documentation projects

Research and documentation projects must relate directly to a place or object and may involve one or more of the following:

  • historical research
  • recording or mapping
  • preparation of a conservation management plan
Interpretive projects:

The Burra Charter says that "Interpretation means all the ways of presenting the cultural significance of a place". Interpretive projects must relate to a place or object, and may involve publilcation of historical material, or interpretive signage.

Before you apply
Before starting your application you need to contact the Heritage branch to discuss your intended project. You should consider the following questions before contacting the Heritage branch:

  • what do you intend to do, where and when?
  • who will be involved and what will each project partner do to assist?
  • why is this project necessary, and why have you chosen this approach?
  • what changes do you hope to see at the conclusion of the project?
  • are there opportunities to build on the achievements of your project in the future?
  • how will you show that your project has made a difference"
