Background
One of the key challenges facing the thoroughbred industry is the successful transition of horses from racing and breeding into new careers and suitable homes where they will receive appropriate care, ensuring high-quality welfare and longevity.Currently, there is no reliable information on the number of thoroughbreds that can be absorbed by the equine community. This information is essential for developing effective strategies to promote the use of thoroughbreds in equestrian disciplines and beyond.
Despite numerous private and industry funded initiatives to boost demand for thoroughbreds, there is an urgent need to significantly enhance these efforts. Developing and implementing a national strategy and approach to retraining and rehoming is essential to effectively address the demand for thoroughbreds exiting racing and breeding.
The project will equip the thoroughbred industry with essential data on the current capacity to rehome retired thoroughbreds in Australia. It will offer an objective assessment of existing practices aimed at stimulating demand and provide practical solutions to help ensure the future welfare of retired thoroughbreds.
