National Archives of Australia is undertaking a range of transformation projects, including uplifting our capability to acquire, digitise, preserve and provide access to digital records on behalf of the Australian Government.

National Archives of Australia is seeking to identify modern, fit-for-purpose data archival solutions that will underpin the management and curation of our digital collection for the foreseeable future.

As background to this work:

In 2023, National Archives of Australia established a Transformation Office – responsible for activities that form part of National Archives of Australia transformation agenda. Concurrently the agency established the Digital First Program, which aims to substantially uplift National Archives of Australia’s capability to manage, preserve and provide meaningful access to an increasingly digital collection.

Early activities conducted during the discovery phase of the Digital First Program unveiled challenges in several areas, including outdated IT infrastructure systems.

The Data Storage Project (this project) is part of the Digital First Program in the National Archives of Australia. During 2024-25, the project will acquire and implement a data archive solution for our digital collection, which is approximately 10 Petabytes in size.
