In 2022, the Women's Safety and Justice Taskforce recommended that the Queensland Government design and implement a scheme to enable some personal belongings and documentation of women and girls to be collected from their nominated address and safely stored while they are in custody (Hear Her Voice Report 2, Recommendation 162).

Many women are received into custody as remand prisoners, which is often unplanned and traumatic. A correction centre will securely store a small amount of property that arrives with a woman at admission, such as clothing, a phone, jewellery, wallet etc. However, women often report losing their personal property that is left behind in the community and having to start the process of rebuilding their lives when released.

The Women's Prisons Property Service (WPP Service) Grant Program aims to address Recommendation 162 and support women in the most remote areas of Northern Queensland by collecting and securely storing their essential personal items for a period of up to one year to allow them time to make alternate arrangements for their period of incarceration, and do so in a supportive, responsive and flexible approach. The Queensland Government has committed up to $926,000 in funding over three years to trial a service to address Recommendation 162.

Applicant information is being collected by Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) to administer the Program, all information will be collected and stored in accordance with the Information Privacy Act 2009.
