The New Zealand Fishing Rules Application has been in use since 2010. The app now has a significant following and is used by recreational fishers across New Zealand to ensure that they are following the rules when it comes to catch and where they can fish.
The app provides online, menu driven access to content describing recreational fishing rules and regulations. There are both iOS and Android versions of the app, as well as a parallel texting service that is used to request and receive catch limits for species. The app is informational only and users are un-authenticated (not required to present identity details to view or request information). Geo-location services are optional, and the app can be used to subscribe to an MPI email service. The app connects to a back-end database(s) that serves up the requested information.
The app has proved to be very useful to its target audience. This is attributable to the simplicity of the application, ease of access, and relevance and currency of the information provided. The app has become the principal channel by which MPI disseminates recreational fishing rules and regulations to the public. The objective of this procurement is to obtain a replacement to the existing New Zealand Fishing Rules Application.
