About the Alcohol Harm Prevention Community Action Fund

The National Public Health Service, Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora invites applications for the Alcohol Harm Prevention Community Action Fund. The goal of this fund is to empower communities to develop and deliver locally grounded, innovative solutions that address and prevent alcohol-related harm.

Objectives of the Fund 

  • Align with Government priorities including a social investment approach. 
  • Build skills by helping communities create and run activities to prevent alcohol harm. 
  • Enhance confidence by supporting communities so they can take care of their health and wellbeing with effective alcohol harm prevention activities.  
  • Encourage collaboration to drive community action that prevents alcohol harm.  
  • Focus on high-need populations to achieve positive outcomes for groups that have evidenced worse outcomes compared to others. 

Available funding

Funding is available through two streams: 

Stream 1 - Catalyst grants (up to $50,000 whole-of-life): For smaller-scale, creative or pilot projects to test innovative approaches and for organisations to establish collaboration opportunities. This stream provides one-off funding. 

Stream 2 - Larger quantum contracts (up to $150,000 whole-of-life): For established community organisations with a track record in alcohol harm prevention. This stream is designed for substantial projects requiring long-term investment. Agreements will be awarded for up to 2 years.

What are we looking for?

  • To be eligible for this fund you will need to be a non-profit or charitable organisations, non-government organisations, Charitable Trusts, Marae Trustees and Iwi, community organisations (incorporated or unincorporated) with experience or show that you can in develop and deliver initiatives focused in locally grounded, community-led and strength-based initiatives that address alcohol-related harm.
  • We welcome projects that not only support the development of community-led interventions but will also build the capacity and capability of organisations working at the grassroot levels, including:
  • Alcohol harm prevention initiatives that empower communities to take preventative action and address the root causes of alcohol misuse.
  • Local solutions that are grounded in the community and actively work with communities. 
  • Initiatives that strengthen community capacity, confidence and capability. 
  • Projects that encourage community collaboration.
