Tender Description

An interpretation project focused on four heritage places in Western Australia: ANZAC Cottage (Mt Hawthorn), Bob Hawke's Home (West Leederville), Old Blythewood (Pinjarra) and Samson House (Fremantle).

Project Scope

This project will rethink and reimagine the existing interpretation at these four heritage places to connect the community to their significance and key stories. The interpretive approaches developed during this project may be as diverse as the places themselves and above all be engaging and appropriate to the storylines, have longevity, and suited to the intended audiences. They should be developed around compelling and engaging stories that connect with the personal experiences of visitors.

The starting point for the interpretive content is the Statement of Significance for each place in addition to numerous reports, plans, images, artefacts and other resources to support storyline development. More broadly, a study commissioned by the National Trust by Dr Bruce Baskerville (link here: Themes For Westralian Histories: Reading the Loved Land - National Trust WA) proposes a series of themes that interlink places and will provide valuable insights in support of this project. The staff of the National Trust have considerable familiarity with the four places. To further support the project the consultant team will be required to run a half day workshop with key staff to discuss the project outcomes including potential themes, storylines and approaches.

Messaging around the work of the National Trust, benefits of membership, and volunteering are to be included in the project outcomes with the content provided by National Trust staff. In conjunction with this project the National Trust will review the presentation of the interiors of ANZAC Cottage and Old Blythewood to support the content and emphasis of the interpretation approach proposed by the consultant team.

Key to success will be consultation with selected stakeholders for each place which is expected to contribute to the development and refinement of storylines that are relevant, appropriate, and support community engagement. The consultation will aim to receive permission to acknowledge key storylines. The National Trust will support the consultant team in identifying key stakeholders for each place.

The consultant team will be responsible for complete project delivery including consultation with identified stakeholders, writing and content development, design development through to final delivery, including fabrication and installation. The National Trust is to provide final sign-off on all content and design prior to fabrication proceeding. The consultant team will be required to:

• Become familiar with the key documents that articulate the significance of these places with particular focus on their statements of significance

• Conduct a half-day workshop with key National Trust staff to discuss potential themes, storylines and approaches

• Develop an outline of the broad themes and storylines for each place

• Consult with identified key stakeholders

• Prepare all interpretive text and other content including images

• Develop a concept design for each place

• Undertake detailed design for the interpretive elements

• If required, obtain all necessary permissions and approvals including DA approval and Building Permit approval

• Obtain at least three quotes for fabrication, delivery and installation of the interpretive elements

• Manage all aspects of the project from initiation to completion including budget monitoring, commissioning, and overseeing fabrication and installation

• Provide the National Trust with a copy of the final InDesign files, installation and maintenance details, and all permissions, prior to submission of the final invoice
