Project goals

The Legacy Mines Program (LMP) within the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development have engaged the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) as lead contractor to undertake remediation works at the legacy Lake George Mine.

The mine is located immediately West of the township of Captains Flat, New South Wales (NSW).     

The purpose of the proposed remediation works is to reduce the off-site risk of airborne dust and contaminated runoff generated from the continued oxidation of sulfidic mineral waste at Lake George Mine. The proposed remediation works are required to prevent serious environmental and human health risks to people accessing the site, to residents on-site and in the town of Captains Flat.       

Soil Conservation Service Staff working on site, are required to undertake human health testing for the duration of the project.

Scope

The Soil Conservation Service has engaged an independent organisation to assess and report base line health risks to determine possible health risks on site.   As a result, human health monitoring services (testing matrix and undertake testing) is required to test for the following:

  • Asbestos
  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Antimony
  • Cadmium
  • Beryllium

As well as exposure to noise and possible vibration from exposure to heavy machinery

The project would prefer a tenderer with the ability to test employees on site (to mitigate off site travel to any testing facility), supplier to dispose of waste off site and be prepared to undertake testing in make-shift facilities (see Appendix A – Location Diagram) and provide reminders to staff relevant to future testing.

Between 5-10 staff from the Soil Conservation Service will be working on the project site for the duration of the project.

The project is expected to take 2 years to complete from April 2025 to April 2027 with an option to extend by a further 12 months followed by a further 6 months.
